There's an article in the BBC News about Amma, the Indian hugging saint. Amma is a phenomenon, she spends a good part of her life transmitting divine love via hug to every Tom, Dick and Harry. Surely she's someone to admire, offering such heartfelt blessings and unconditional love to total strangers. She's just been on tour in London, and she's attracted a huge swag of people from all around the world. According to a psychologist quoted in the article, a hug can induce a kind of natural opium, which is one reason why it feels so good. The simple act of hugging someone can be such a powerful thing; it can release pent-up feelings and even produce psychological breakthough experiences in people. It also can help us to remember our connection and the divinity of life. I think it makes a much more powerful impact on the psyche when a total stranger is hugging you, as you have no association with the person and can more fully appreciate the symbolic aspects of the embrace. A hug can be a very motherly thing, and Amma makes it a very nurturing and comforting experience. This could be like receiving a hug from the cosmic mother, and taken in the loving embrace of the universal consciousness.
According to the article, Amma has given over 26 million hugs in her time. She hugs everyone who turns up, and often that means she has to stay up late to get through everyone; only getting a small amount of sleep. It's kind of like the 'Free Hugs' campaign that has been going on all over the place lately, except Amma is dedicating her whole life, heart and soul to it. It's a really great thing that she's doing and it's probably something that most of us couldn't imagine doing. It's a good way to beat the rat race!
