Psychic Rambo

Source: Time

A recent article in Time talks about a plan for the U.S to develop ESP-type technology. A coalition of scientists from the University of California at Irvine, Carnegie Mellon University, and the University of Maryland has awarded a 5-year $4 million contract to come up with a new way of communicating. The idea is that instead of soldiers communicating by headsets, they'll be able to communicate by thought alone. The team is hopeful that this technology will "lead to direct mental control of military systems by thought alone." Mind control? If it works, it could probably be expanded to not only communicate, but control people's thoughts. They say it can't go any further, but it sounds like PR to me:

...there's no way you can get there from here. Not only do you have to be willing, but since your brain is unique, you have to train the system to read your mind — so it's impossible to do it against someone's will and without their active and sustained cooperation.

It's just an idea at this stage, and they think it might take a decade or two to develop. Aside from the possibilities for the malicious abuse of the technology by the forces who like to enslave humanity, brainwave technology is a really exciting field. I'm optimistic about this; obviously it could go either way, but brainwave technology is amazing. Of course, nothing beats the brainwave technology in our heads though.
